Health Services

Health services for the students in this school district are provided by ESA certificated Registered Nurses along with LPNS and Health Technicians.

The focus of the school nurse and health services is to work with families, staff and community to keep Washington's school children healthy and ready to learn. The school nurse's primary function, with the assistance of health technicians, is to strengthen the educational process through interventions and protection of the health status of children.

The school nurse and health technician work with school staff and parents to identify students with health problems and concerns and design individual or special programs for the students.  As with everything else, a strong partnership between home and school will help ensure children are educated in a safe, healthy and secure environment with a goal to achieve academic success.

Vision and Hearing Screenings for Students

To support student learning, Washington State requires schools to screen students in Grades K, 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 for both vision and hearing every year. These quick, non-invasive screenings are done by the Health Services team during the school day, with minimal disruption to class time.  If your child is not scheduled to be screened this year, you may request a screening by contacting your child’s teacher or school nurse. Inform them of any concerns you may have.

Vision screening may be completed using the SPOT/Plus Optix tool, LEA symbols, HOTV letter, or Sloan letter vision chart to check for visual acuity and other potential vision concerns. Screenings are done while students wear their glasses or contact lenses, if applicable. Hearing screening is done using equipment that provides tonal stimuli. If a student's results indicate a need for follow-up at their first screening, they are screened again at least two weeks later, which helps rule out temporary causes like colds or ear infections. If both screenings suggest that follow-up is needed, a referral for further vision or hearing evaluation will be sent home.

If you have any questions regarding the results of your child’s screening, the screening process, or to decline health screening for your child, please contact the school nurse.
