Under the state law, the parent of any child who has a life-threatening condition or allergy is required to complete and Emergency Care Plan (ECP) / Individual Health Plan (IHP). Prior to attendance at school, each child with a life-threatening health condition should present a medication and treatment order from a Licensed Healthcare Provider (LHP) addressing the condition. A life threatening health condition means a condition that will put the child in danger of death during the school day if a medication and treatment order, providing authority to a registered nurse, and a nursing care plan are not in place. (ex. asthma, diabetes, severe seizure disorder, anaphylaxis).  Following submission of the medication and treatment order, the registered nurse will develop the nursing care plan. Students with life-threatening conditions will not be allowed to attend school without an ECP/IHP in place. 

Furthermore, for conditions that require medical procedures to be performed at school, a parent must submit a Health Care Provider Order for Medication or a special medical procedures order to the school.

RCW 28A.210.320

 This law adds a condition of attendance for students with life-threatening conditions. Treatment and medication orders and nursing care plans requiring medical services must be in place prior to the students first day of school.
