PTR Leadership Club gives back to local families in need for the holidays
For the next two weeks, the Ptarmigan Ridge (PTR) Elementary School Leadership will host its annual holiday food drive, encouraging classrooms and the community to donate non-perishable food they will send to the Orting Food Bank.
The club's biggest event, the annual holiday food drive, is a project that has been put on for nearly 10 years, helping to feed hundreds of families since then. PTR classrooms will collect non-perishable food for the leadership club to gather and deliver to the Orting Food Bank. Local community members are also encouraged to help donate food as well.
The PTR Leadership Club makes up nearly 40 4th and 5th grade students, setting positive examples in and out the classroom, performing community service around the school, and representing PTR's entire student body.
The club's advisor, PTR's PE Teacher, and Orting High School's Soccer Coach, Brandon Peters, says the food drive teaches its members a lifelong lesson.
"We're trying to show them to be leaders outside of school," Peters said. "We want to show them how to connect with the community, and the food drive is a big one that helps us."
PTR Leadership Club Member and 5th Grade student Haley Douglas say she likes to give back to the community.
"I like to help people," Douglas said. "They need food, water, warmness, and a little bit of shelter."
4th Grade student Ben Luna says it's important for families to have basic needs.
"It's important for people to have food," Luna said. "They need to be nice and warm so they won't be cold and get a fever."
5th Grade student Toni Contreras says the annual food drive is not only an act of kindness but will leave a long-lasting impression on her.
"It shows respect," Contreras said. "Also, I'm learning how to share, be grateful for what I have, and try to make other people happy."
Also, the PTR Leadership Club says canned soup and canned corn are the top two non-perishable food items in need.
The food drive will run until Friday, Nov. 19, and the PTR Leadership Club will deliver the items to the Orting Food Bank on Monday, Nov. 22.
Those who would like to donate can drop off non-perishable food items at the PTR Front Office Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed Thursday, Nov. 11 for Veteran's Day). As a reminder, PTR, along with all Orting School District buildings, are in compliance with the Secretary of Health's Mask Order.
