Statement Regarding Tyre Nichols Body Cam Footage Release

We understand that there is going to be upsetting body cam footage that is going to be shared this evening from the Tyre Nichols incident that happened earlier this month. In preparation for that, we want to share some articles to help support your conversations at home as well as suggestions on how to help support yourself and your student.

Tips for talking to children about violence and traumatic incidents:

Make time to talk.

Let your students' questions be your guide as to how much information to provide. Be patient; children do not always talk about their feelings readily. Watch for clues that they may want to talk. Young children may need concrete activities (such as drawing, looking at picture books, or imaginative play) to help them identify and express their feelings.

Keep your explanations developmentally appropriate.

Early elementary school: provide simple information balanced by an assurance of safety.

Upper elementary and early middle school: answer questions and assist in separating reality from fantasy.

Upper middle school and high school: students will have strong and varying opinions about the causes of violence in schools and society. Emphasize students’ role in safety and how to access support.

Observe children’s emotional state.

Some may not express their concerns verbally. Changes in behavior, appetite, and sleep patterns can also indicate a child’s level of anxiety or discomfort. Seek the help of a mental health professional if you are at all concerned.

Maintain a normal routine.

Keeping to a regular schedule can be reassuring. Encourage them to keep with their schoolwork and extracurricular activities, but don’t push them if they seem overwhelmed. Limit/be aware of media exposure.

We value our partnership with the Orting Police Department. Part of our School Resource Officer program is to foster positive student and community relationships with police. We will have no school on Monday, January 30 for Employee Enrichment Day. If your student is experiencing personal hardship, please have them reach out to their counselor when we return on Tuesday, January 31.
