Women's History Month is a month-long celebration that started as a week-long celebration in Santa Rosa, California in 1978. The organizers chose the week of March 8 to correspond with International Women's Day. Join us this month as we recognize some of our young women in Orting that are making HISTORY! Each week on our social media, we will highlight a student that represents OSD well.

Jasmine Madora-Rivas, 12th grade student at Orting High School
Jasmine aspires to become a commercial electrician. Right now, she is getting experience at the Pierce County Skills Center where she has learned about wiring, building, and plumbing. After graduation, Jasmine plans on going to Bates Technical College. Attending the Skills Center is an extension of our Career and Technical Education (#CTE) program.
As for who Jasmine looks up to, Jasmine says, "Obviously, my mom. She has shown me I can be independent and powerful and if I want something, I better work hard." You're making history, Jasmine!
Mirabella Palermo, 5th grade student at Ptarmigan Ridge Elementary
Mirabella aspires to make history by becoming an orthodontist, and specifically helping people who otherwise can not afford dental work. "I know there are people out there who can't afford dental care," Mirabella shares. "I want to make a program to help people receive dental care that usually couldn't afford it." Mirabella would like to attend University of Washington.
As for Mirabella who looks up to, she says her older sisters and her mom. "If I have a question about life or anything, they are always there to answer." You're making history, Mirabella!
Emily Failing, 3rd grade student at Orting Primary School
Emily has a special story. She has juvenile arthritis and was recently in the hospital. Despite all of this, Emily has a happy attitude.
When Emily grows up, she wants to be a nurse. "When I was in the hospital, I saw a lot of nurses do a lot of cool things," Emily explains.
As for who Emily looks up to, she says her cousin Kacey. "She helps a lot of people because she is a nurse," Emily shares. "She is a good influence to me." You're making history, Emily!
Lehua Siaki, 8th grade student at Orting Middle School
Lehua aspires to make history by playing college softball at either Oklahoma, Florida, or UCLA. She also has a side gig of baking called "Softball Sweets." She has been baking for two years since watching the show 'Nailed It' when she decided she could bake better than the contestants on the show.
As for who Lehua looks up to, she says her cousin Tailah. "She's my best friend. She's always been there for me." You're making history, Lehua!
