OHS Senior Amber Burgess crowned as Orting's new Daffodil Festival Princess

At the 2021 Daffodil Festival Princess Selection at Orting High School (OHS), the judging committee selected OHS Senior Amber Burgess to wear the crown and represent Orting School District and her local community.

Along with Burgess, ten other OHS seniors were selected as a finalist:

  • Dean Brandt
  • Aaliyah Corbett
  • Rileigh Daughtry
  • Marisa Dawson
  • Peyton Hamilton
  • Hailey Henderson
  • Adelene Mosney
  • Tayvin Reiqum
  • Shawna Lei Salazar
  • Cindy Washam

When OHS Teacher and Coach Jeremy McNinch read Burgess' name as the winner, she burst into happy tears and had to tell herself that this was not a dream.

"I didn't think it was actually happening," Burgess said with excitement. "I felt so honored, grateful, and ecstatic. It was the highlight of the night."

In front of a crowd of nearly 100 people inside the OHS Cafeteria, including the finalists' families, friends, and teachers, the judges required them to do a 1-minute speech on the 2022 Daffodil Parade's theme, Hope Rises, sharing their personal stories about their resiliency and overcoming the odds throughout life.

Burgess, who shared parts in her life she kept to herself, hopes it can uplift those in attendance.

"I hope people can learn that they are strong," Burgess said. "They can overcome obstacles and become the strongest that they can ever be."

Rochelle Fritz, mother of Orting's 2021 Daffodil Festival Princess, Ava, and a former princess herself, says the finalists' bravery to be vulnerable will inspire others.

"It takes courage and transparency to be real," Fritz said. "Being able to come together and bond over something so unique brings these candidates together for a moment they'll never forget."

In 2022, Burgess will join the other selected Daffodil Festival Princesses across Pierce County, joining them in the parade and other community events across Washington state.
