OSD Hosts First District-Wide Cultural Unity Fair

On Thursday, May 2, we hosted our first district-wide Cultural Unity Fair for our community. In years past, Orting High School would host a cultural event for their school community. As our district continues to grow in diversity, we expanded the high school event to include all of our schools.

Puyallup Tribe of Indians Land Acknowledgment

The event started off with our district's first Land Acknowledgment in partnership with the Puyallup Tribe of Indians. One of our community members and parents, Ty Satiacum, performed the Land Acknowledgment in txʷəlšucid/Twulshootseed while his son, an Orting High School student, translated the Land Acknowledgment into English. We raise our hands to the Satiacum family for performing the Land Acknowledgment and the Puyallup Tribe Indians for supporting this event. You can learn more about the Puyallup Tribe of Indians and their language revitalization program on their website.

School Performances, Food and Cultural Diversity

We saw performances and art pieces that celebrated Latino/a culture, American Sign Language, Samoan culture, and more. We also saw performances by the Orting Middle School jazz band and choir. Our culinary students also created foods that honored a variety of cultures from around the world.
