'Anybody Can Be a Leader' - Falcon Fellas Soar High at Orting Middle School

At the beginning of the school year, Orting Middle School Assistant Principal Earle McWright kept hearing about an energetic group of seventh grade boys. McWright came up with a plan to help guide the group to make a positive impact on their school.

"I thought, 'How could we turn that energy into something positive?'" McWright shared about how he came up with the idea for the leadership group. While some of the students hesitated at first, once they were given the opportunity to be creative and be role models for their school, they shined.

"Our first activity that we tried to host was a tournament to play video games. [While] it didn't work out so well, we learned from that," Teddy Halady, a Falcon Fella member, said. "Now, we've been doing [different activities] like hiding eggs around school, shamrocks, and other stuff for different holidays. We [also] came up with a positive message board and that has made a big impact school-wide."

The group is made up of 14 seventh grade boys. The Falcon Fellas have also made a difference in their community by being a part of the middle school food drive.

"It feels good to make kids happy," Falcon Fella member Kolby Stenbakken says.

"I think this particular cohort, I don't know why they wouldn't be part of ASB or the leadership class next year," McWright says. "With a little more maturity, and their charisma, I can see them in all kinds of positive outlets and positions of student leadership and beyond."

What's Next for the Falcon Fellas?

With the school year coming to a close, the Falcon Fellas and Principal McWright are faced with the dilemma of what to do next. The Falcon Fella members do agree though that they do not want the group to end with them.

"In the future, I hope that we can add more people, and we can do bigger things than just [activities] at our school," Nemo Griffieth shares.

"I see, not just in this school, [but] in other schools, having leadership programs kind of like ours," Aiden Hamilton says. "[The Falcon Fellas] spread the impact that anybody can be a leader."
