Superintendent Search Updates

The Orting School Board is pleased to announce that it has selected Dr. Tony Apostle as Interim Superintendent beginning April 1st through June 30th. Dr. Apostle is a life-long resident of Pierce County and a product of Tacoma Schools. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in English from the University of Washington and his Doctorate from Washington State University. He began his career as an English teacher and has held a variety of administrative positions including principal. He was hired as the Superintendent of the Puyallup School District in 2004 and served for eight years before retiring in 2012. Dr. Apostle said he is excited to join the Orting team and looks forward to meeting staff, students and their families as well as community members. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Apostle to our district.

The search for a new superintendent to replace Dr. Marci Shepard will begin by gathering input from a wide range of District stakeholders. Staff, parents, students, and community members will be provided opportunities to share their thoughts. The information will be used to develop a draft of the leadership profile and selection criteria. Once the School Board has reviewed and approved the draft, Northwest Leadership Associates begin the recruiting process. The Board’s goal is to have a new superintendent by July 1st . We will continue to post regular updates on the search process and information on opportunities to participate.

Message from Board President Stanley Holland: The Orting School District has begun to recruit highly-qualified applicants for the position of Interim Superintendent. The Board is seeking an experienced leader to fill the vacancy created by Dr. Shepard’s departure and plans to announce its selection in the next two weeks. The Interim Superintendent is expected to serve from April 1st through June 30th.
The firm Northwest Leadership Associates has been selected to assist the Board in the search for a permanent Superintendent who would take office on July 1, 2020. The firm is a partner with the Washington State School Directors’ Association (WSSDA) and is recognized for using a transparent and inclusive process. Staff, students, and community members will be invited to provide input which will help guide the Board in its decision-making.
The Board will provide regular updates on the search process and information on opportunities to offer input both in-person and online.
